BEWARE OF HIGH PRESURE SALES SEMINARS
Better Business Bureaus serving BC warn consumers to use caution when attending free seminars this summer.
Consumers who plan to attend free seminars should be aware that in most cases the presenter will promote products and services that are for sale, such as self improvement, investment education materials and home based businesses.
Presenters may promise to provide valuable “insider secrets” or information on how to operate a profitable business. Client testimonials are provided as proof of guaranteed success. Participants in these seminars are usually asked to make a significant investment in training and materials.
Be cautious if the seminars presenter makes the following claims:
• You will earn a lot of money fast
• There is no experience or training necessary
• The program or business opportunity is available for a short time only
• Success is a sure thing
Avoid becoming a victim:
• Take your time to make an informed decision
• Do not feel pressured into buying or signing up for anything at the seminar
• Research the company that is hosting the seminar or conference. Call the BBB at 604-682-2711 or toll-free at 1-888-803-1222 or check our website at www.bbbvan.org to request a business reliability report.
• Be cautious about purchasing from seminar representatives who are reluctant to answer questions or who give evasive answers
• Before spending your money consult with business people and experts in the field
A successful business takes time, planning and strategic thinking. Be careful not to make quick decisions without doing the appropriate research. People who are interested in starting and operating a business should consider all the costs involved. These may include licensing, advertising, insurance, bookkeeping and other related expenses. Keep in mind that, in any business, there can be a wide variation in earnings, no matter what they tell you at the seminar. Know how much money is required before you invest and understand that you may never recoup the money you’ve invested.
