FREE Consumer Protection Event returns to Vancouver – Scam Jam 2006

Vancouver, BC – Every year thousands of residents in Vancouver fall victim to scams and fraud.  To help people protect themselves, March has been designated as national Fraud Awareness Month; a month-long campaign aimed at educating consumers on fraud. How to Recognize It. Report It. Stop It.

Scam Jam 2006
Tues. March 21st
8:30 am – 3:45 pm
Hyatt Regency Hotel
Georgia Ballroom
(2nd level)

As part of this campaign, the Better Business Bureau, the BC Securities Commission and the Business Practices & Consumer Protection Authority of BC are hosting the 4th annual Scam Jam on Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.  This free educational forum and consumer exhibit will offer tips on fraud protection and helpful information on how to be a smart consumer and investor.

“There are things you can do to prevent fraud, and there are things you can do once you have been a victim of fraud or deceptive marketing”, said Sheila Charneski, President of the BBB.  Many agencies, organizations, government branches, and BBB Member companies are joining together for this event to expand awareness of the ongoing work they conduct to investigate, follow and ultimately enforce the law against individuals and companies who victimize consumers in the marketplace.

Highlights of the day’s activities include Guest Speaker Detective Sergeant Barry Elliott, PhoneBusters and Mark Forsythe hosting CBC Radio’s “BC Almanac” show, on location from 12 noon to 2 pm. Mark Forsythe will be joined by several guests to talk about identity theft, recent scams, trends in the marketplace and offer ways that the public can get involved in reporting fraudulent companies and individuals.

Throughout the day consumers can browse the “Ethical Marketplace” exhibit featuring BBB Member companies offering free consumer protection information and helpful hints to being a smart consumer.

Scam Jam is a free event and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Free tickets are available online at www.scamjam.ca or by calling 604-685-SCAM (7226).

Scam Jam 2006 is sponsored by the BC Securities Commission, Business Practises & Consumer Protection Authority of BC, Competition Bureau Canada, Real Estate Council of BC, Vancity, and CBC Radio.
