What Does the BBB Means to You?
The BBB is funded and supported by businesses in B.C. for the protection of business, its employees and the general consumer public.
You can enlist the BBB's help if you have been victimized by misrepresentation in advertising or selling, or have had other unsatisfactory business experiences. The BBB can also help by providing facts on unknown business firms, solicitations, investments and merchandise. The BBB is a one-stop shopping center for the information you need to know before you purchase something or sign a contract. 500,000 British Columbians contact this BBB each year to learn about companies and check our Buyers Tips before they purchase. Savvy consumers tell us that they always check with the BBB before hiring a service company or making a large purchase. In a recently conducted survey, close to 70% of BC consumers surveyed said that they prefer to do business with a BBB member. After 65 years in BC, the demand for our services has never been greater.
The BBB is as close as your computer and your phone – check with the BBB first!
Why deal with a BBB member firm?
Why would you call the Better Business Bureau? For the same reasons more than 500,000 consumers make contact with this BBB each year – to obtain general consumer tips and valuable information about specific companies before they decide where to spend their dollars. And why would you choose to take your business to one of the almost 4,000 companies in the Greater Vancouver area, the Fraser Valley, and the rest of mainland B.C. that support the BBB? Because whether you’re spending a few dollars at a drycleaners or a few thousand dollars with a home renovation contractor, you need to know that you are dealing with a legitimate company that stands behind its products and services.
Not every company is eligible to join the BBB. Only those firms that have demonstrated a commitment to customer service, who agree to abide by the BBB Code of Ethics and who have a satisfactory customer complaint handling history may be accepted as members. Granted, every company can expect the occasional customer complaint, but it’s how a company responds to these complaints that makes a big difference to customers.
A BBB member’s commitment to customer satisfaction is further strengthened before that member is granted permission to use the distinctive BBB “torch” logo in its advertising. By signing an annual “logo use agreement”, member firms pre-commit to binding arbitration in case of a dispute that can’t be resolved through regular channels.
Thus, consumers can rest assured that when they find the signs of a BBB member – whether it’s the BBB decal on the door, the torch logo in an ad or the Reliability Seal on their website – they are dealing with a company that is proud to make a public statement about high ethical standards.
